Today’s review is on Shimmer Lights Original by Clairol Professionals. This shampoo can be picked up at your local beauty stores such as Sally’s. Shimmer lights in a purple toning shampoo for grey, silver and blonde hair. It helps brighten, refresh and tones down the yellow brassiness in hair. Before going blonde back in April I had never heard of a purple shampoo so, this was all new to me. I had read many reviews and people seem to like and recommend Shimmer Lights. I tried one other brand, but wasn’t as happy with the results.
How does a purple shampoo help tone down yellow brassiness in hair? Well lets take a quick look at a color chart. What’s the opposite of yellow? Violet. So, Shimmer Lights Conditioning Shampoo works by depositing violet tones in your hair to cancel out the yellow tones that may appear in silver, grey or bleach blonde hair. Simple as that. It does not lighten your hair. So, if your hair isn’t already light enough it most likely won’t do anything. In my case I had yellow tones left in my hair after bleaching. Today was my first time using it and I’m already impressed with the results. It has toned down a lot of the yellow in my hair leaving me a light blonde color. It also really brightened my color. I lathered up my hair and left it on for 4 minutes. The scent is floral and I’ve seen many complain about the scent, but really it’s not that horrible and it does the job. No complaints from me. Clairol Shimmer Lights is a dark violet shampoo so, make sure not to leave it on for too long or you will be in for a surprise when you rinse it out and your hair looks violet. If by accident you lose track of time or your taking a risk I’ve read that it will eventually wash out. After all it is just a shampoo and not permanent. Also remember that toning shampoos are not meant to be used everyday. Overall though I would recommend this shampoo to others who are looking to tone down the yellow/brassiness in their bleached hair. I know I’ll have this on hand from now on.
As some of you may know I bleached my hair a few months ago. I took my hair from dyed black on dyed red on dyed black and so on and saw all the not so flattering colors in between. In the image above you can see my hair after my first bleach job. Orange. Not the color I was going for, but my hair also couldn’t stand going through another full on bleach job. So I searched google and talked to my friend who was in school for hair and got some tips. I ended up trying a bleach wash/bleach bath. Remember it still contains bleach so it will also do damage if left on too long. It’s mixed with your shampoo or you could mix it with your conditioner I’ve tried it both ways on either dry or damp hair. Lather it up like you would while cleaning your hair and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse & use a good conditioner. I know many people talk about using toners on their hair, but at the moment I have not tried any. I’ve just been using a shampoo for bleach/blonde hair with a good conditioner and a hair mask once a week.
I have naturally dark brown hair so about once a month I like to do my roots. When I’m being lazy I spray on a hair lightener and use my blow dryer & straighten iron to blend my roots in better. Otherwise you could just mixed up a small amount of bleach and apply it to your roots. Make sure not to leave it on too long since virgin hair is much easier to bleach than dyed hair. So keep an eye on it.
Bleaching hair at home from dark colors isn’t the easiest job, but it can be done if you take your time and not rush it. Your hair goes through different color stages as it lightens. It won’t go an awesome blonde after bleaching it one time if your coming from a dark color. Remember I’m not a hair dresser, so what works for me might not have the same result on your hair. This was just the experience I had and what I’ve been doing to achieve my color. I’m just a girl who decided I could dye my hair blonde myself & save some money.
I recently got the chance to try out the new Goody Heat Flash Dry blow dryer. Over the last few weeks I’ve been putting it to the test. I normally just allow my hair to air dry because I can’t be bothered with my other blow dryer. My arms get tired and it seems like I’ve been doing it forever. My hair is long and past my shoulders. This one claims to dry your hair up to 35% faster than your leading dryer. I personally did find that it cut down on drying time and I actually don’t mind using this one. It is pretty large, but is light weight. So I have no problem with that.

I used it with and without the diffuser a bunch of times now and have loved the results. My hair was left nice and smooth with no frizz. When leaving my hair curly and using the diffuser it also had the same great result of being frizz free. The cord is a good length. I love the different settings to choose from and where the buttons are placed. This is easily my favorite blow dryer. It does an awesome job pretty quick.
